Survey: Help improve Kartographer[uah wit]

Apologies for writing in English. If anyone could help translate this message, it would be deeply appreciated.

Do you create interactive maps with Kartographer (mapframe)? If your answer is yes, we would like to hear from you. Please take part in our survey and help improve Kartographer! Where do you run into problems using it? Which new features would you like to see? Editors of all experience levels and with all workflows around Kartographer are welcome to participate.

Here is the survey: https://wikimedia.sslsurvey.de/Kartographer-Workflows-EN/

  • The survey is open until March 31.
  • It takes 10-15 minutes to complete.
  • The survey is anonymous. You don't need to register, and we will not store any personal data which identifies you, such as your name or IP address.

Unfortunately, the survey is only available in English, but we have tried our best to use simple English and to add visual examples. If English is not your native language, it might help to use a translation tool in your browser.

Some background: Wikimedia Germany's Technical Wishes team is currently working on the Kartographer extension. Over the last few months, we have been working on a solution to make this software usable on wikis where it isn’t available yet. In the next phase of the project, we are planning to improve Kartographer itself. Because Kartographer is used quite a lot on this wiki, we would love to hear about your experiences. More information on our work with Kartographer and the focus area of Geoinformation can be found on our project page.

Thank you for your help! – Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (pabligbagan) 21 Maret 2022 16.55 (WITA)[wales]

Hi @Johanna Strodt (WMDE), We here already using the tools massively. All the articles which indicated places will use the mapframe tool. I also already participate on your survey and hopefully know the result in the future. Thank you and cheers from Bali. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 8 April 2022 13.41 (WITA)[wales]
@Joseagush: Excellent! Thanks a lot for your message and for taking part in the survey. Once the analysis of the survey is done, we will publish the results here: meta:WMDE_Technical_Wishes/Geoinformation. -- Happy Friday, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (pabligbagan) 8 April 2022 15.35 (WITA)[wales]
Hi @Johanna Strodt (WMDE), one more question from me. Can you make the kartographer zoom automatic. As you can see in Serawai article the zoom level can not include the area but in Bengkayang article its already perfect. I don't know how to make the mapframe_zoom level automatic. It will be so much help if you can solved this issue, but if this request need a lot of your time please let me know too so i would not ask you more about this. Thanks in advance. You guys rock! Joseagush (pabligbagan) 8 April 2022 15.43 (WITA)[wales]
@Joseagush: I don't know if this is doable, but I will pass this on to our team. Thanks a lot for your kind words, it is very, very appreciated! -- Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (pabligbagan) 8 April 2022 15.53 (WITA)[wales]
@Joseagush: I got a reply from my engineer colleague:
"The zoom level is already automatic, so if that's not working I would say it's a problem with the template. I couldn't figure out why the templates are doing this, but they come with a default zoom level of 8, and this article is defaulting to a zoom level of 10: <mapframe zoom="10" .... The solution is to modify templates until zoom="10" is omitted."
Does this help you? -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (pabligbagan) 8 April 2022 19.20 (WITA)[wales]
Hi @Johanna Strodt (WMDE), I am sorry it still not help me much, but no worries, I will try to figure it somehow. Thanks for your time. Appreciated it. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 9 April 2022 12.13 (WITA)[wales]
@Joseagush: That's a pity. Maybe the creator of the template can have a look at it? -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (pabligbagan) 11 April 2022 14.51 (WITA)[wales]
Hi @Johanna Strodt (WMDE):, I am the creator of all templates here, btw. Basically i create infobox settlement template using this code:
{{if empty |{{#if:{{{map|}}}{{{map_image|}}}||{{yesno|{{{mapframe|yes}}}|no=|yes={{Infobox mapframe
|id={{{qid|}}}
|zoom={{{mapframe_zoom|}}}
|frame-width={{{mapframe_width|}}}
|frame-height={{{mapframe_height|}}}
|marker={{{mapframe_marker|}}}
|marker-color={{{mapframe_marker_color|{{{mapframe_marker_colour|}}}}}}
|frame-lat={{{mapframe_lat|{{{mapframe_latitude|}}}}}}
|frame-long={{{mapframe_long|{{{mapframe_longitude|}}}}}}
}}}}
}}
and set the {{{mapframe_zoom|}}} to automatic as suggestion, but still somehow the districts articles which has bigger area than default zoom level can not automatically included the district boundary. For example, see Serawai article. Sorry if my english is not good enough to explain this, but thanks for you attention for this issue. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 11 April 2022 15.09 (WITA)[wales]
@Joseagush: Hello and thanks for the explanation. I was on holiday, hence the late reply. Unfortunately, we can't help with this template at this level of detail, but a colleague gave me this piece of information that I wanted to share with you: "There is an automatic zoom feature which is not well publicized. If no zoom is set (and I think no coordinate??) but there are markers or geoshapes, then it will auto zoom to show them." Does that help you? -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (pabligbagan) 25 April 2022 14.36 (WITA)[wales]
Hi @Johanna Strodt (WMDE), thanks for the answer. I think it help. I will try it. Thanks and have a nice day. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 25 April 2022 14.45 (WITA)[wales]

About changing interwiki name into basabali / Basa Bali[uah wit]

As some of the pages are in balinese script, I suggest to also add the name in balinese script in the interwiki section. Is that possible? Limfurg (pabligbagan) 10 April 2022 19.36 (WITA)[wales]

Hi @Limfurg, Thanks for asking. Yes, it is possible but how and where to do i am not the expert. So if you do know how, you can create it. Thanks. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 11 April 2022 17.53 (WITA)[wales]
